Opening night of Keith Haring @ Gladstone Gallery

05/05/2011 § 2 Comments

Keith Haring was born on May 4, 1958.  Yesterday would have been the late artist’s 53rd birthday. I was invited to attend the opening night gala reception of a Keith Haring exhibit which features 133 previously unseen works on paper at the Gladstone Gallery (located at 530 West 21st Street in NYC).  The works are taken from a series called “Manhattan Penis Drawings for Ken Hicks” (1978).

The show also featured three large-scale previously unseen paintings on paper created as live paintings during a series of Bill T. Jones performances in 1982-84.

After Jeffrey Deitch closed his SoHo gallery last June to become director of Los Angeles’s MOCA, Keith Haring’s estate was left without New York representation. But now the artist’s estate has signed up with Barbara Gladstone.

Had to wait for Debbie Harry to stop leaning over the frame so I could snap a shot of this never before seen architectural drawing…

This chick was killing it last night with a 1987 Keith Haring painted motorcycle jacket, probably made the year she was born.
